A symbolic place, crossed by illustrious personalities and destined for wine.
at the palace of Diano d'Alba
The origins of the winery are intertwined with the events of the past and bring the hands of time back to the heroic deeds of Napoleon Bonaparte. During the expeditions on Italian soil, the officers of the French general were stunned by the beauty that unfolded before their eyes. Among the French soldiers who fell in love with this slice of Italy was Assic, captain of the Napoleonic army. Enchanted by the panorama of the Langhe, Assic decided to erect a palace on the top of a hill, in Diano d’Alba, elected as a hermitage during his long stays in Italy.
Even today, the palace stands out in the streets of the village, with its unmistakable façade, dominated by the solemn red door. Throughout history, many illustrious personalities crossed the red doors of its threshold, including the Savoy colonel Giuseppe Castellazzo who destined the palace for wine use. But the real guest of honor was the first king of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II. The gentleman king loved to lose himself in the pleasures of the table and in his frequent stays in the Langhe he crossed the ‘red door’ several times to indulge in good drinking.
Finally, in recent decades, the keys to the winery have passed into the capable hands of Pierfranco Bonaventura, one of the most renowned winemakers in Piedmont.
We put our experience at the service of tradition – underlines Pierfranco – reserving obsessive attention to the raw material and its processing in our cellars. Our goal is to enhance and interpret the territory, which is why our wines age exclusively in large barrels. The long rest in wood allows the wine to acquire a remarkable structure and great aging potential. Our watchwords are quality and excellence. This is how our finest labels are born, including the prince of the Langhe: Barolo.
Under the able guidance of Pierfranco Bonaventura, the “Porta Rossa” has inscribed its name in the roll of honour of Piedmontese wineries, carving out a place of honour in the Langhe wine scene. Aware of the illustrious past, the Piccini family takes up the legacy of the “Red Door”, taking over the reins of the prestigious Piedmontese brand, with its historical archive that preserves the old and glorious vintages of the company.
The philosophy of “Porta Rossa” is closely aligned with the mission of the Italian wine family, which for 140 years has been telling the story of Italy through its excellent wines. From today, Piccini 1882’s vast oenological horizon embraces the hills of the Langhe, respecting the production philosophy that exalts the close bond between wines and their place of origin.
Strength and elegance come together in a Barolo with an aristocratic profile
The result of the most authentic historical interpretation, Barolo della Porta Rossa comes from grapes from several historic vineyards located in Serralunga and Perno, in the municipality of Monforte. In Roddi, in the Bricco Ambrogio vineyard, the Cru of the same name was born, vinified by selection. The gray and compact marl of the soil and the blue marl, alternating with sand, assemble their prerogatives of strength and structure in the wine, harmonizing them with elegance and aroma.
Bright ruby color, which fades towards orange as it ages. The aroma, composite and ethereal, allows you to appreciate the harmony of the fruit, evolving towards a pleasant spicy texture. On the palate it is dry and complete, flowing austere and continuous, with aristocratic strength and character.
